WELCOME!

Welcome

On behalf of the League of Women Voters of Wilmette, the Glenview Park District, and nine additional co-sponsoring Leagues of Women Voters throughout the north and northwest suburbs, I welcome you to Our Climate Matters - a four day symposium on global warming.

James Madison once declared "A people who meant to be their own govenors must arm themselves with the power that knowedge gives.".

To that end, in the summer of 2006 the Wilmette League of Women Voters made a commitment to develop a project that would help inform citizens about global warming. Our Climate Matters is the culmination of that commitment.

As you will see, what began as an idea has evolved into an impressive and wide array of programs - each focusing on a different aspect of this complex problem. Offering include prominent speakers, as well as panels, forums, and workshops in which scientists, business people, economists, and legislators and other policy makers, architects, and citizens will discuss and share information and consider possible solutions. A "Green" film festival, a presentation of the Chicago Cool Globes exhibit, as well as an evening of "Cool Jazz" add a change of pace.

Many thanks must be extended to all those who have contributed to the success of this endeavor. In particular, we are indebted to the committed members of the Steering Committee who have given countless hours and tireless energy to this project, to the businesses and individuals who have lent their financial support, and, finally, to the impressive array of speakers and presenters who have foregone any financial compensation to share their expertise with all of us.

Our hope is that Our Climate Matters will stimulate, educate, and foster serious discussion on global warming. Ultimately, in our wonderful democracy, it is the will of the people that affects change. Let the serious conversation begin!

Warmly,
